Norman managed to stay ‘band free’ through much of his early life – in fact he had few, if any musical ambitions at all. But marriage to Shirley (solo horn) put him right in the firing line. He maintained his music free lifestyle for a further four years until the couple moved to Chalgrove, a village near Oxford. Shirley joined the village band and all was fine until a knock on the door revealed a man called Tony, preceded by a tuba. A chap of few words, he simply said ‘Come along to the band when you can play a bit!’ and then disappeared like the Cheshire Cat’s smile.
‘I’m still trying!’ says Norman! (A sentiment Shirley agrees with, a little too readily!)
