Steve is primarily a bassist, trained at Birmingham Conservatoire, and plays both electric and upright electric bass as a skilled reading player. He is also an accomplished singer, guitarist and pianist.

He originally joined the Silver Band to help with the Area Championships playing percussion. Having got the bug, Steve decided to play the trombone, but he is a bassist at heart and when the opportunity to play the Bb bass came up he soon jumped sections. Steve is now principal Eb bassist with Skegness Silver Band having gained his grade VI after playing the tuba for only a year. He has even been seen playing a sousaphone in a trad band.
